The NSW Government is proud to be re-opening the Theatre Royal, in partnership with Dexus, which has commenced construction on a $170 million redevelopment to rejuvenate the retail, dining and theatre components of Sydney’s MLC Centre.

Reopening the CBD-based iconic theatre will increase Sydney’s capacity to host new productions and compete on the world-stage for more first-run international tours. A redeveloped Theatre Royal will deliver significant economic benefits to the city through employment and tourism along with contributing to the vibrancy of the city’s night-time economy.

Create NSW launched a competitive tender process for national and international theatre operators and producers in December 2019, to ensure that the best operator can be found to deliver quality lyric theatre productions into the future.

The theatre, situated within the redeveloped MLC Centre with high-end retail and dining outlets, is currently under construction and is anticipated to reopen in stages to the public from late 2021. The successful operator will be announced in 2020.
